We Live Just to Die – No Escape From the Battle

Some people are real fighters.  Whenever there is opposition they rise up, they love the challenge, competition eggs them on.  Even simple discussions are turned into situations for a victory.  However, there is one battle that all will loose.  The battle of death.  This may not seem encouraging, but the battle with death is one war, that all will face, and all will succumb to the power of death.  (I am assuming that Jesus does not return first.)  Ecclesiastes 8:8 says, “No one has power over his spirit to retain the spirit and no one has power in the day of death. There is no release from that war.”  People struggle to fight death.  They seek the newest medical treatments, while gasping and fighting for the last breath.  How depressing, we live just to die!

But the Apostle Paul gives a different perspective. Yes, our bodies will die, but he declares that the power of death is overcome.  1 Corinthians 15: 55 says, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”  Paul talks about victory over death because of the work of Jesus Christ.  Our trust in Jesus frees us from the consequences of death.  An everlasting eternity with God is available.

Now here is the challenge.  If our faith in Christ gives us the victory over death, why are we afraid of dying?  In our theology, we as Christians would say we overcome death, yet in our daily living we are controlled by the fear of dying.  Obviously in these situations we are resting in the old natural way of looking at life and death instead of looking through the eyes of redeemed people, those who trust and rest in the victory over death that comes through Jesus Christ.  Our life on earth is only a short time compared to eternity.

Lord, I want to trust in Your victory over death, instead of being caught in the natural fears over death.  Help me to live, knowing that I already have victory over death, and in all situations may this bring great peace and joy to my heart.
