Your First Taste of Fairness

I Declare Myself King

Genesis 2:18

Discussion Starter:

Sealand is a real place, located 6 miles off the coast of the United Kingdom in the North Sea. ( After the Bates family took over the abandoned fortress in 1966 it was recognized as a sovereign state in 1967. Largely, they took it in reaction to a dispute with the British government over a similar fortress in the Thames, near London.

There’s something in us that longs for independence. We want to make our own decisions, we want freedom of movement, freedom of whom are our friends, freedom of what we eat, dress like, classes we take, on and on.

Just like independence has come at the high cost for the Bates family, it can come at a high cost for us, too. We need to make sure that our longings for independence don’t lead us down the path to isolation from our community and ultimately loneliness.

Three Questions:

  1. If you were to start your own country, what would you call it?
  2. If you were the ruler of your own country, what would be some laws?
  3. Would you rather live alone or with a lot of people?

Chew on this:

If it’s not good for man to be alone (see Genesis 2:18) than why do humans long for independence?
