What is the very first question people ask after they meet someone new?  “So, what do you do?”  We tend measure others by what they “do”.  If they have a prestigious career or make a lot of money we immediately have a higher opinion of them.  If they do something very common we are less impressed.  “You’re a real rocket scientist Bill?  WOW!  And, you’re a stay at home home Jill?”  Turning back to Bill, “So tell me Bill, what’s it like working at NASA?”

This evening some High School friends dropped by and we were catching up on all the friends each of us had lost track of.  One that came up in the conversation has become a hopeless drunk that can’t keep a job and his younger brother has to pay all his bills and give him an allowance.  On the other hand another manages a billion dollar investment fund and owns a 10 million dollar yacht.  He was spoken of in glowing terms.  It was hard for me to be impressed.  He has always been self-centered, shallow and narcissistic.   I found myself far more interested in taking about his boat than about him.  But then I do like boats and… I don’t like him.  The fact that his boat is worth $9,995,000 more than mine does not make him smarter, better or more significant than me.   Not that I sound jealous or defensive anything.   After all,  he who has the most toys when he dies…still dies.

God’s words to Joshua as he took the mantle from Moses are very revealing to what should really be important in life.  “No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.  BE strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.  Only BE strong and very courageous, that you may observe to DO according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.  Have I not commanded you? BE strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”  (Josh 1:6-9)

Three times God tells Joshua who he should BE (strong and courageous) while he is observing to DO.  The promise is also clear that this is the pattern that leads to true success and prosperity.  The question therefore should not be, “So what do you DO”, but “So, who do you BE?”  Maybe not the best grammar, but clearly that is what really determines our true worth and value.

The world seems to be obsessed with the likes of Donald Trump and Paris Hilton.  I am too…because I love to make fun of them.  All the money in the world and the poor Donald can’t get a decent haircut.  And Paris, well she’s just an idiot in my books.  Yes, I know Jesus still loves her.  Thank you for reminding me.

Few of my heroes ever made any money.  They are the Albert Schweitzer’s and Mother Theresa’s of history.  Both gave there lives to serve others.  Schweitzer spending 40 years in the Congo and Mother Theresa even longer in Calcutta, India.   Interesting though that both were awarded Nobel prizes.  What they did,was clearly a reflection of who they were, and even the world took notice.

We do not have to go to Africa or India to start to BE before we DO.  We simply have to determine who we want to BE regardless of what we do.  If we are in business are we going to BE honest?  If we are employees are we going to BE hard working?  If we have position and power are we going to BE humble?  You get the picture.

NFL fans will know the name Kurt Warner.  He’s lead his team to the Super Bowl 3 times.  Most recently this year with the upstart Arizona Cardinals.  In 1999 and 2001 it was the St Louis Rams.  Both years he won the Most Valuable Player.

Kurt Warner is far more than a football sensation.  In 1999 Family Magazine named him Father of the Year.  He has 7 Kids.  His youngest Zach is blind and mentally handicapped.  Kurt describes him, “Everything is a struggle for him.  He falls ten times a day and gets up and exudes joy.  For me to get down on myself for throwing an interception would be a joke.”   So when Kurt was Introduced at 1999 NFL banquet as “a football player who is also a Christian.”    He went to the mic and responded, “I would rather BE a Christian, who just happens to play football”.

So, who do you be?

After 3 days, I’m the first to comment?

I must agree with Pastor Mark in one way, you can’t judge a person by the job they have or the riches they have. But I don’t hold the wealth against them if they have accepted the challenge of Mal 3:10. Some use that verse to spur themselves on to produce more, so they can afford to give more. That is an admirable reason to be ambitious.

Those of you who know the scriptures better than I can tell us that the Bible says to “count the cost” of your success. Judas got the silver, but I don’t think we could call him a success. We can’t violate our values to get what we want. Judas is an extreme example, but I think most of us have committed a similar sin on a lower scale at some point in our lives. I’m sure I must have “ratted out” my brother when I was a kid and got some kind of reward for it from my parents. Mind you, he did a lot of bad things ………. he kinda deserved it 😉

Donald Trump is no hero of mine either, but I do hear stories of some quiet giving going on, and that most of what we see is a PR exercise in “branding” the Trump name.

I think it was very nice that God made certain that Paris Hilton had a public come-uppance by going to jail and realizing it was time to start growing up. That may have affected more teens than we’ll ever know. Still, a long way to go but she’s not the train wreck she once was.

Hi Paster Mark, I just want to comment about the sermon you gave on Aug.22. on the fear of God. Thank-you so much! It was a breath of fresh air. As you said, most churches today give seeker friendly messages while excluding the point of laying our lives down and counting the cost. Salvation is free with great benefits but it costs us our lives.
We need to hear about God’s love, grace and mercy but it needs to be balanced with the awesome,Holy and reverent fear of God. The fear of Lord is to honour, esteem, value and respect Him above anything and anyone else. His word is often taken for granted and treated casually, people flirt with sin and eventually fall away. We have seen many couples walk out of their marriages, families and from God. It is heart breaking and sad because most think it’s okay.
Please continue to speak on this issue as we all need to hear the truth of His word. 2 Timothy 4:2 , AMP says, “Herald and preach the Word! Keep your sense of urgency [stand by, be at hand and ready] , whether the opportunity seems to be favorable or unfavorable. [Whether it is convenient or inconvenient , whether it is welcome or unwelcome, you as preacher of the Word are to show people in what way their lives are wrong.] And convince them, rebuking and correcting , warning and urging and encouraging them, being unflagging and inexhaustible in patience and teaching.” Please continue to speak boldly, we need to hear it, we often see the light but don’t feel the heat. We appreciate you and keep you in our prayers.

If our identity is in Christ we can be confident in ourselves as children of God and there is no reason to feel insecure or inferior. We do not need to measure ourselves according to the world’s standards because we know that we are in this world but not of this world, and one day all of this will pass away but we will live on in perfect oneness with Christ. As Paul said, “Our sufficiency comes from God” and He determines our true worth and value. We need not balk if God calls us to be leaders in this world by refusing to believe that we’re smart enough, talented enough or rich enough to create change and influence others. When God calls someone to a specific ministry He enables him/her to continue the work by empowering him/her through the power of the Holy Spirit. And He will continue to use us in this way until our purpose in this world is fulfilled.

When I ask, “What do you do?” it is more out of curiosity about the way others live their lives. Money and prestige do not impress me and I don’t give anyone preferential treatment based on their education or income. I am more interested in knowing if they feel fulfilled and whether the joy they exude is genuine. Relationships matter more than possessions and having someone open up his/her heart to me brings me greater joy than anything I acquire in this world.

Dear Pastot Hughes: I am asking for some deep personal advice! I watch u every Sunday and saw u in person when u came to Surrey, BC, last. U r my mentor. I went thru breast cancer and beat it but still have some very heavy side effects! My question is that my family, mom and dad, and brother, Craig are born again Christians. I am still doing my best to find my faith and I feel so deeply hurt by my family because they seem to judge and scrutinize every move I make in my life. I am 48 yrs. old and believe in God in all my power but don’t understand why they judge me so strongly and I just feel I can’t meet up to their standards in life. It hurts me deeply and do my very best every day to be a good person! I like to watch u every Sunday on TV as u are my motivation for the week and they tell me I should be going to church. I would rather watch u as my inspiration! My brother was at one time a drug addict but overcame his addiction thru God our Saviour and now dedicates himself to Jesus Christ. I just would like to know how I can overcome these uneasy family tensions while still maintaining my belief in God without being critizied so strongly from the ones I love! Thank u for your answers! I love Jesus and my family but feel so divided and am searching for some sort of resolution! God Bless, Pastor Hughes ( Elaine Harrison)

Thank you Tim for your email regarding Pastor Mark’s blog. My husband enjoys Pastor Mark’s preaching very much and of course so do I. He usually had a hard time to stay awake at church’s sermons. He claimed that he can’t be “preached” to repeatedly 60 times over on the same subject and not be put to sleep. Pastor Mark, you spoiled my husband! But it is true that sometime we gain more in half hour of your preaching than 1 and 1/2 hours of regular church preaching. I just keep encouraging him to practice patience and seek what God’s want us to learn each sermon we hear without murmuring.

Through our Lord’s leading, I have been helping family & friends with His ordained healing oils for our well-being. Oils mentioned in the Bible such as Frankincense, Myrrh, hyssop, spikenard, onycha, cassia, galbanum, etc., to name a few. Frankincense has the medical properties of antitumoral, immunostimulant, antidepressant, muscle relaxing, its use for depression, cancer, respiratory infections, inflammation, immune-stimulating. Frankincense contains sesquiterpenes which stimulate the limbic system of the brain (the center of memory and emotions) and the hypothalamus, pineal and pituitary glands. The hypothalamus is the master gland of the human body, producing many vital hormones including thyroid and growth hormone. Frankincense was well known during the time of Christ for its anointing and healing powers and was one of the gifts given to Christ at His birth. “Used to treat every conceivable ill known to man,” frankincense was valused more than gold furing ancient times, and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it. It is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, Ebers Papyrus (dating from sixteenth century B.C.) an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes.

My heart goes out to people who are praying for God’s healing but seek and use witchcraft methods which does not restore us to God’s image.

As we are warned in the Word of God that there are many false prophets in the world. So same as for Frankincense that not all frankincense on the markets are the same or the real deal. Some people I have talked to said that they have heard about the oil and tried the “oil” and it doesn’t work. But they are not using the one that is grown, harvested, distilled properly without added synthetic ingredients or adjusted or adulterated for greater profit in mind.

Let’s take Lavender for example, its medical properties are: antiseptic, antifungal, analgesic, antitumoral, anticonvulsant, vasodilating, relaxant, anti-inflammatory, reduces blood fat/cholesterol, combats excess sebum on skin. It uses for respiratory infections, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, menstrual problems/PMS, skin conditions (perinial repair, acne, eczema, psoriasis, scarring stretch marks), burns, hair loss, insomnia, nervous tension. And Lavender’s fragrant influence are calming, relaxing, and balancing, both physically and emotionally.
So how many prescription drugs it takes to do what Lavender does. But beware that true lavender is often extended with hybrid lavender or syntheitic linalol and linalyl acetate.

I have been attending a same church for 10 years during this period what God’s reveal for healing to me. But only one person believe whom I led by the Holy Spirit to give her a set of oils to and today she is so very thankful for what she has. For others, I have given them info, CD, and book to but not believe. Many had died prematurly and suffering unnecessary and one preferred to have body parts removed and going through harsh treatments that do more harm to the holy temple of God than to look into the healing oils. My heart was very saddened. I don’t know the reason why they don’t believe me and rejected what came to me from the Lord by prayers for my healings. I was a single mom for over twenty years. I worked for a corporate phone company for 20 years as a clerical clerk. The lady started the church here in North America is a pharmacist, also a furnature business owner and the senior Pastor was a retired gynecologist. My own sister said to me once that doesn’t my doctor know more then you? But now she would not use statin drugs over God’s healing oils. Anyway, I prayed to the Lord and asked that He would lead me to a church where people would believe what I do so that I can share His healing oils and serve there. Many months later, even I have forgotten my prayer. Two young men came to my door and gave me a booklet of John and Romans and invite me to visit their church. I said no thanks as I am a Christian and am attending church already. But they want to ensure that I know that I have the assurance of salvation with Christ alone. I thought they were very special and I changed my mind and accepted their booket. I kept it for about 3 months before I looked at it and decided to visit them since they are very closed by home. My husband & I met the Pastor and had lunch there after the service. The Pastor learned of what I do. The next evening he called me and asked if I would help his wife with a persistent respiratory problem. It was around 7:30 pm. I asked if it was serious that she needs to come right now. He paused…(probably asking his wife) and said that they’ll come tomorrow morning. The Pastor was the only person that I came across without many questions such as how does the oils work, how much experience I have, how much do I charge, etc, etc. Today, they have send many people to me. One couple were visiting Minister from out of town that Pastor send to me. He is in his mid sixties. After 1 session of 9 oils anointing his feet & spine with various technique, he has full range of motion of his neck which he claimed he lost for 6 years. His wife has multiple health issues that she came twice within 3 days and claimed that two sessions was far more than her doctor ever done for her in years. That is powerful. God’s medicine is awesome! I am just an instrument. Then it dawned on me that God has answer my prayers. I haven’t transfer my church membership yet, but I intend to very soon.

The true is every child of God is blessed with His blessings. I took a leap of faith to do and share His healing oils first to His people and also to the unrighteous. As He causes the sun rise and the rain fall to the righetous and and unrighteous. Amen. I beleive my God is bigger than my corporate pension. I was 5 years away from my entitled early retirement. As I pleaded with God that I wish to learn and share the healing oils without having to feel constantly tired as when I was a working, single mom. I have traveled to various States, Ontario Canada, and Ecuador for learning of the oils. It is like learning the Word of God that it is most fascinating and exciting with endless discoveries and blessings.

When the world is still seeking for cure of cancers, degenerative diseases, parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, depression, anxiety, herniated disk, sciatica, scoliosis, release of pent-up negative emotions, etc. God already provide it for us from the beginning of time. There is nothing new under the sun!

Thank you again for your blog and your good work of serving the Lord. Please feel free to contact me for more info regarding the true healing oils.

Good post! Great scripture too. So many are busy finding value in what we do instead of who we are. When all is said and done, most of it will be shown to be meaningless anyway. Godliness with contentment is great gain. I’d rather be a christian…serving Him is the whole (all we need) of man.

  8. I’d like to begin my own blog one day. It was a very nice blog that you made here. Continue the success 😛
