Do you know a control freak, or are you a control freak? What causes us to react in that manner? Many times the fears in our lives, the experiences of the past, can amplify our need to be in control. Not wanting to go through another experience like what we have gone through, or what we are afraid to go through, we guard ourselves and protect ourselves. We try to control our situations so that there is less pain or better results from our surrounding environment. Sometimes this controlling nature can be beneficial but many times, especially in relationships, it can be very destructive. What is a key to helping to overcome this desire to control or manipulate our situations or others?
In a unique way, praise and thanksgiving helps us to see beyond what we have gone through. It forces us to see where there had been positive things happening and lets those positive thoughts creep into the negative emotions and memories of the past. Thanksgiving helps replace the fears and the need for control that lies within us. This is why Philippians 4:6 encourages us to, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God”
Today is our Canadian Thanksgiving Day. Take time to count your blessings, appreciate God’s gifts and provisions. See what He has done and anticipate that He will continue to work around you.
