Recently a viewer brought to my attention one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen on the internet.  A Minnesota couple, Pete and Alicia Arnold, started a website called http://www.birthornot.com/ On the site they chronicle Alicia’s pregnancy after 10 years of trying to have children, including three miscarriages.  They post daily entries about the anxiety of bringing children into this world, ultrasound pictures of the fetus and even a video.   The couple is educated and articulate.  So far none of this should raise any red flags as these kinds of blogs are common on the Internet as people have a bizarre sense of reverse voyeurism where they want others watching them – even if their lives are profoundly dull and boring.  “Status update; I’m eating sandwich!”  I think we can thank Youtube, Twitter and Facebook for that.  They should come up with a new all-in-one social media website that rolls all three into one, it could be called… You Twit Face.

What sets Pete and Alicia’s site apart is that they have invited readers to vote online as to whether they are going to abort their baby or not.  Yes, you read that right!  They have emphatically claimed from the start of the pregnancy that they will let the vote count alone determine whether they keep and raise the child, or whether they murder their own unborn child.  They have set December 5th 2010 as the decision date since that is just prior to the 20 week window for a legal abortion in Minnesota.  It is incredibly unbelievable considering that they have reported that the baby is wiggling and kicking and has already been identified as a boy!  When I first saw the site I thought it was either some sort of cruel hoax to stir the abortion debate, or perhaps the most irresponsible thing I have ever seen from a set of perspective parents.  What has the opinion of a bunch of random strangers on the Internet got to do with whether you should have your own baby or murder it?

My more carnal side immediately started thinking about starting an alternative site where we could vote on whether we should somehow abort the lives of Pete and Alicia.  People could vote, donate a dollar or two, and then with the money we could hire a hit-man and bump the couple off.  It seems like a reasonable response to me and it is biblical to boot… Exodus 21:22+23 …check it out.  On the other hand, it may be too vindictive and Old Testament for most.  (Note for those that don’t understand sarcasm:  I am clearly joking. I am obviously taking a swipe at the absurdity of letting strangers decide online whether a human should live or die, and was applying the same sick logic back to Pete and Alicia.
A joke is rarely funny if you have to explain it.  I am not going to start a website called You Twit Face either.)
In fact, 100’s of more noble people than me have already written and offered to adopt the child, begging the couple not to abort it.

As of this writing 1.5 million people have already voted with 75% saying; ABORT.  What kind of sick people are these?  Have we been transported back to the time of the Rome Colosseum where the spectators call for the death of the gladiators, only instead of warriors the participants are tiny, unborn, defenseless children?  I’m sorry, but this just angers me and completely sours any faith I might have had in humanity.  Now, understand that at this stage of the game, the pro-abortion lobby has gotten into the act and is influencing the outcome of the vote with the use of internet voting-bots.  But even before that happened, over 50% were calling for them to abort.

The latest development in this story is that Pete is claiming that the whole thing was a stunt to reopen the abortion debate.  Apparently he has pro-life leanings and has wanted the baby from the beginning.  His wife Alicia however, is still posting that that is not true and she had every intention of following through with the abortion if that was how the vote went.  Although she now sounds like she might be planning on having the baby, she is still contending that until the fetus can survive on its own outside the womb it is not a viable human being.  That is the stupidest argument ever for abortion!  For those of us that have already had children, we know they cannot survive outside the womb till they are about… 29 YEARS old!   Seriously though, even once a baby is born, it cannot survive without constant parental care for months if not years.  I would argue that once a baby is outside the womb, in many ways it is far more dependent upon the parents for survival.

I will watch this sickening saga south of the border with disgust, but I can only hope it is nothing more than a cruel hoax.  Meanwhile on this side of the border we have a tremendous story of political heroism on the same subject.  Rod Bruinooge who is the Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South, and a member of our church, has launched a bold and courageous fight in the House of Commons.   Rod has been an outspoken voice for the unborn ever since he was elected in 2004.  He even turned down an opportunity to work with Native Affairs (his nationality) to chair an all party Pro-Life Caucus whose goal is to work for the protection of the unborn.  Rod has laid his political career on the line for this controversial and often unpopular cause.  He has repeatedly stated that, “Unborn children have less legal value in Canada than a human kidney.” In a letter he submitted to the National Post, he made this statement: “I have no choice but to advocate for the unborn and seek to have their value restored in my Canada. Our collective future depends on it.” I have great respect for Rod Bruinooge and regardless of your political leanings, so should you.  I see him not unlike William Wilberforce who dedicated his entire political career to fight for the end of human slavery in England.  It took him 39 years and cost him any political ambitions that he may have had, but in the end he won the battle, hearing only on his death bed that the English Parliament had banned slavery.

In the political life of a backbencher, they might have one shot at introducing a private members bill into the legislative agenda.  For Rod’s opportunity he has sponsored a bill he is calling Roxanna’s Law.  Roxanna Fernando was a young Winnipeg woman who got pregnant.  When she told her boyfriend Nathanael Plourde she was expecting he tried to coerce her into having an abortion.  When she refused after several attempts, he took her out for Valentine’s Day and then later beat her 20 times with a wrench.  He bound her with tape and threw her into his trunk.  Then he and a friend drove her to the edge of the city and beat her to death with hockey sticks before leaving her bloodied, lifeless pregnant body in the snow bank.

The pair were convicted and received life sentences but that does little to change the fact that it is not only the unborn that are at risk in Canada, but often their mothers.  Roxanne’s Law would change all that making it illegal to even try to coerce a woman into having an abortion.  Rod knows that he is swimming upstream with this bill, but he also knows that it is a fight that could be won if the grass roots gets behind it.  Rod has an excellent website dedicated to the bill. http://www.roxanneslaw.ca/ Please visit it and more importantly sign the petition in support of the bill.  You can even print the petition off from the website and circulate it around amongst your church and friends.  This is a battle worth fighting. Let’s help Rod win this one.  I believe we can do it if we work together, and it could become the first victory in a battle that we have been losing for way too long.

  1. Betty says:

What a sick and disturbing story.
Not everyone can have children or as many children, as they want, so they should keep the child for someone who wants the child.
To me, it is a child, whom God has ceated, even though we can not see the child until the child is born, with our physical eyes.
And in Roxanna’s case, when people have made a choice, they regret later, they should make the best of the consequences they face.

  2. Lisa says:

Holy Toledo, Batman! What on earth is wrong with this sick world. I know what I am thinking so WHAT ON EARTH MUST THIS DO TO GOD ???!!! Good night people! Give your head a shake!

  3. Jorja says:

First of all I’m 100% for keeping the baby! and in my opinion, child services should take the baby away from them as soon as it is born and give it to someone that can not have Childern, and would love this Baby. Not treat it like some sort of object. They do NOT deserve this baby at all! If they don’t care about this Babys life now…what going to happen when this Baby gets here, and needs to be feed and changed, keeps them up at night, crys?!? Whos to say they might not kill it then? 🙁

  4. Bruno says:

Hm this actually brings a question that I was wondering how your congregation deals with it.

Basically, as man, do you have more trouble bringing the point of being pro-life as it seems the reactions is mostly “well you’re not a woman, you can’t understand.”

As such, do you think that the message of pro-life is easier to share if it’s a woman who does so? Or have you actually found no difference.

  5. Joanne says:

    Come…Lord Jesus…Come

  6. tammy says:

ahhh, the depravity of man…and woman.
In the bible it says God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.
While studying my bible in the old testament something hit me up side the head. Man kind is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow…we just never learn.
As a wife who cannot have children or even afford the adoption fees, this sickens me to no end.

  7. Bonnie says:

Heavenly Father!! Please let your will be done in this situation!! Your attention is needed in this case immediately if not sooner father God!~~~ In u I trust!~ In Jesus name i pray Amen~~~ I prayed because I know that prayer works and for the first time in my life “I am speechless, without words, just plain wow!!~~~ Bonnie

  8. Victoria says:

Well, you sure picked a doozey, Pastor Mark!

To be or not to be….?
    pro-life that is.

This couple has allowed the devil to use them in the most dispicable way,the better question is…do they know it? Are they aware of the evil they are participating in?

I will quote the last few lines of her recent post.

” Once again I would like to thank everyone for sharing their comments (even the hateful ones) because freedom of speech and the ability to state ones beliefs is one of our greatest freedoms in this country. As we go into our Thanksgiving holiday I will be thankful for the continued health of our baby and that I live in a country where dissension and discussion about difficult topics only makes us stronger and ensures our freedoms.”

Is she using her position as a pregnant woman to show people the importance of the freedom of choice…?

Is she collecting information on peoples reactions?

Whatever she is doing, it is ungodly, because the consequences were: hate mail and getting fired from her job-

BUT, as time went on during her blog, she began to understand why she should have the baby.

On the other hand Pastor Mark, perhaps she is allowing YOU to help influence her decision,by:

    -catching your attention

-which got you to post the link on your blog.

-which, in essence, will allow THE PEOPLE OF GOD to speak their minds and make a vote.

    I voted “give birth”.

    Thanks for the heads up,Mark.

I encourage all you “head shakers”, and “Good nighters”to VOTE, instead of walking away from this “evil but real” situation!
We must learn to beat the devil at his own game!

    • Joshua says:

First let me open with the fact that I agree with almost everything you state regarding this particular blog. Second, are you thinking clearly? The almost everything I am referring to is your third paragraph.

You quoted ;Exodus 21:22-25 (New International Version, ©2010)

22 “If people are fighting and hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely[a] but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman’s husband demands and the court allows. 23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

So do you plan to make the “hit” on them before she gives birth and therefore the Exodus passage would apply to you? Or after? Then what happens to the baby? Or maybe she does abort it, then what about “Thou shalt not kill”? If the Old Testament is “too vindictive”, then why are you quoting it as a back up for your statements?

Pastor Mark, THINK. You are a respected Pastor inciting violence. Maybe you are joking. But there is no obvious apology or jest statement in this blog. What if some far right wing radical takes up the cause in the name of Christianity….and he cites your blog? Is there not a law about citing threats over telecommunications and other devices? If you substitute a political figure’s name for the name of the people, say Queen Elisabeth, Rod Bruinooge, or Stephen Harper’s, would the police not take this REALLY seriously? Say nothing comes of this paragraph, no one other than myself is upset, what happens down the road ….when you become even more famous,…what happens when it is taken out of context and you have to defend yourself not on the issue of pro-life but on the issue of assassination?

Listen, that one paragraph opens up a can of worms and it does show something that I do not think you intended. The far right wants to protect life before it is born but is willing to send their older children off to war to die and to kill children in other countries… the left wants to let a woman choose to kill her unborn but is against war. This is a crazy world, but we as true Christians need to find a way to battle evil other than with more evil. Please have someone vet your writings before some of this stuff comes back to haunt you.

  9. Maria says:

    Thou shalt not kill. Period.

  10. Mark Hughes says:

I am clearly joking. I was obviously taking a swipe at the absurdity of letting strangers decide online whether a human should live or die, and was applying the same sick logic back to Pete and Alicia.
A joke is rarely funny if you have to explain it. I am not going to start a website called You Twit Face either.

  11. Jasmine says:

What bothers me is this quote from their website where Alisha says, “I’m sure I will receive considerable harassment about this post, but to me until the baby can survive without the mother (otherwise known as viability) it is not a feasible life.”

I truly believe that the child is already alive. Hey, it’s moving-isn’t it? It’s just common sense that if something is moving and kicking it’s alive! This poll is not about whether someone should live or die, it’s about whether or not someone should be put to death.

When scientists and doctors came up with the point of viability, they didn’t argue the existence of the fetus or the fact that it was alive; they only provided information to inform us on the stage of the fetus’ development at which point it had a chance to KEEP ON LIVING if it were removed from it’s natural environment.

Would we, as adults, be considered viable if we were removed from our natural environment? We consider ourselves alive right now, don’t we? Yet if we were taken into space without a spacesuit and oxygen, would we keep on living?

The amniotic sac is the baby’s spacesuit and the umbilical cord supplies its oxygen.

And the point of viability changes from one abortion clinic to the next. There are abortion clinics that will abort the fetus at 24 weeks’ gestation. So does that mean that this is really only a theory–based on speculation? I see the point of viability as irrelevant in all of this.

Where is the scientific data to support it? Are scientists allowed to perform tests on human fetuses like they do on the fetuses of pigs and rats? If not, why? Is it because there are laws against this? If so, what is the law protecting? Perhaps the rights of an unborn human.

The government would allow people to end the existence of the human fetus but not allow them to run tests on it for scientific purposes?

  12. Al says:

Hey as a pastor will you go out into the street and preach the gospel and tell the truth, thanks for not hiding behind the pulpit, and scared of the fact you could be hauled into the human rights commission, for speaking the truth, the huge elephant so to speak that is in the room.

  13. Isaac says:

Yeah, it’s incredible how cold a person’s heart can become. This couple needs Christ so desperately. Also, this couple doesn’t realize how much Satan is trying to steal from them. If they would abort, they’d have to live with that the rest of their lives.

  14. Karen L says:

I think that Social Services should be there to catch that baby when it is delivered and deliver it into the hands of a family that truly is Godly and has its head on straight.

  15. Christie Braun says:

blah blah blah, I signed Bruinooge Petition and sent it to all my contacts, as I am able to see the forest through the trees.

  16. Steve says:

This world’ for the dogs. I’m glad Christ isn’t sticking us here forever. Rod, you’re a hero.

  17. sophie says:

I checked it out and there is something called” YOUTWITFACE”. I guess there is more then one brilliant mind!

  18. Sally says:

We are indeed a sick society! We are seeing narcissisism at its best. Here is couple who crave so much attention that they offer up their child to Molech for their 15 minutes of fame. God help us all!
And God help them to come out of depravity before it is to late!

  19. Malech says:

Steve # 16, Re: ‘Rod you’re a hero’. Really then do you think he is deserving of a northern MB lake named after him? Or is that honour just bestowed upon other heros (and hockey players) that really put their lives on the line. Much like some of your other dialogue your point is fleeting.

  20. Steve says:

Hello Malech, I’m getting the sense of something here. Wait….Ahhh yes. The sense I’m getting is man does Jesus love you. Jesus sees through all that. Step into His kingdom. You won’t regret it.

  21. karen husted says:

interesting that the pastor mentions losing faith in humanity. this should remind us to not put our faith in man. remember Psalm 146- “Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save.” we need to consider the total depravity of man. we are shocked, yes, but should not be surprised.

  22. Malech says:

Steve, Once again, fleeting points of intangible garb. You are assuming something you can’t prove other than what assumptions make of you and me. How do you know where I stand, sit or step for that matter? No regrets.

  23. Steve says:

I don’t know where you stand. But like I said, God loves you regardless of where you stand. I have no beef with you, I just want to see you in heaven someday.
And any of my fleeting points will blow away but the solid ones won’t. We all got to pass through that fire. God bless.

  24. Malech says:

Steve, Please forgive me, could you give me some scritural reference on your point “we all have to pass through that fire” just so I know it is theologically sound and not just your personal opinion.

  25. Steve says:

Revelation 3:18 Therefore I counsel you to purchase from me gold refined by fire and tested by fire that you may be wealthy, and white clothes to clothe you and to keep the shame of your nudity from being seen, and salve to put on your eyes, that you may see.

  26. Steve says:

But if persons work is burned up(under the test),he will suffer the loss [of it all, losing his reward],though he himself will be saved, but only as one[who has passed through the fire]. 1 Corinthians 3:15 Amplified Bible

  27. Malech says:

Steve, Not a great example. In my opinion grossly out of context. Therefore, not applicable. Rather, the way I see it.

Rev Ch 3 is for the city of Laodicea. laodecians (the lukewarm church) Jesus correlates their spiritual ambivalence (lukewarm) to their current spiritual status. He uses the fact that their neither hot or cold so he spits them out. Some commentary draws parallells to the fact that their water was not potable and would have to be spewn if drank a very direct correlation. A literal implication is also drawn on one of their primary industries sheep and the wool (garments) and salve from the manufacturing of them.

Jesus wants to illustrate that putting trust in material things will not be the basis beyond wordly circumstances rather get the gold, garments and salve from Him so you may be rich in the spiriit, that you will be clothed and not naked(shame) and that you may see.

  28. Steve says:

Believe what you want. I have no desire to argue with you. Take care.

  29. malech says:

Steve, Thats cool, I just wanted to illustrate the importance of being accurate when expressing christian views or values on these sites. otherwise they can become dilute and eventually invalid possibly hindering what you set out to do.

    peace out.

  30. Steve says:

Yes, being a Christian and saying everything the right way is a hard job. I really give credit to guys like Pastor Mark. I don’t know how they keep their mouth from insulting everyone like I do.

  31. CG says:

It’s with tears in my eyes I read of this couple and their unborn baby. I was put in remembrance of something a wise man of God said once “why are we surprised when sinners sin ??” They need salvation – and as Christians we need to pray for them.

  32. Victoria says:

Steve: I enjoy your on line company, and opinions.
Malech: I understand why your mission would be to correct others!

Let’s remember that what you write is your OPINION about someone ELSE’S journey, through the kingdom of God.

Interpretation of Gods word is going to be different with alot of people…

But…. after studying the drivers handbook…,we all eventually learn how to drive.

I have a friend, who knows I attend church, and who knows my kids go to Sunday school.
I explained to her when I first met her that I was Christian and was practicing the 10 commandments on a daily basis, to try to live by Gods word.

So she assumed I should be leading the perfect life!

What I had to explain to her,
is that I am following Gods word, TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY!
To help shape my less than perfect human characteristics.

We can only seek out ways to educate ourselves better, and empower our fellow Christians.
I believe if your heart is in the right place, God will open your eyes to the truths he teaches.

This also goes for the couple who has discovered that they do not want to hurt their newly developing baby.

God works in mysterious ways and has beat the devil again!Trust in our Lord!

  33. Sally says:

Well put Victoria, we are all on our own journey. That being said we still have to rise up to meet the standard of righteousness that God has outlined for us in His book, the Bible.
As for this couple, I am not sure where they stand with regards to hurting their unborn child. I am praying that this really indeed is a hoax and at the same time, I am praying God’s protection on this little boy still developing in his mothers womb.
If this all has been a hoax, and I pray that it is, it has definitely caused the subject of abortion to be front and center in the media again; and it is another opportunity for the people of God to stand up for the life of the unborn.

  34. Victoria says:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. —Proverbs 3:5

    Amen to you Sally! 😉

  35. Steve says:

I would like to say something about why I harp on sin.
I’m a married man ok. During my marriage, I hated the way my wife would treat me sometimes. Truthfully I felt as if I was in a prison and the prison guard was Hitler. Not saying I was right but that’s the way I felt.
Now my wife had some horrific things happen to her. She needed someone to sacrifice themselves for her which I was unwilling to do at the time. But God kept showing me I needed to get rid of the things in my life that were wrong in order for her to believe me and trust me.
My wife now trusts me and is happier than I’ve ever seen her. All because I looked at myself instead of her.
This is why I am against sin in the church. Abortion is a horrific crime against God. But how can the church make a proper impact against abortion when there are things we need to look at right in the midst of us. Once we start dealing with issues we don’t want to look at, something is going to happen. I’m tearing up here because I know this is true. We need to act like Jesus, me included. God bless.

  36. Malech says:

    Now everyting is perfectly clear.

  37. Sally says:

Appartently, the Arnolds have closed their online poll according to lifeSiteNews.com. Now we will have to wait and see what the outcome will be for this dear little boy whom they call Baby Wiggles. I plead the blood of Jesus over Baby Wiggles for safety and protection and I pray that the Arnolds will do the right thing!.

  38. Victoria says:

If I could reach out and shake your hand, and give you a great big bear hug,I would!

My partner has gone through EXACTLY what you have! We have been together through 3 kids and 13 years.

I applaud you for seeing the truth in yourself and your life-

    What is that cliche?,,

    “No pain, no Gain…”

I am saddened and ashamed, that WE, on the womens side(the women that have suffered abuse and other pain), hurt the ones we love, as a cry for help.

I want to apologize to all the caring husbands out there doing their best to hang in,and tough it out.

    God loves you soooooooooooooooooo much!

  39. Betty says:

    Well done, Steve.
You remind me many times, of my brothers,I think they teach me many valuable lessons, including, to keep my eyes on Jesus and no one else.

  40. Connie says:

AMEN Bonnie! That is the best way I feel to deal with this whole thing – PRAY,PRAY, PRAY!

  41. Sally says:

Yes Bonnie and Connie, we need to pray, pray, pray!
So I now declare Psalm 118:17 over this baby that this baby will not die but he will live to declare the righeousness of God in his life. And Lord, in Your Name, the Name above all names, we lift off the spirits of pride, death, murder, violence, confusion, destruction and anti-Christ off of him and off of his parents, Pete and Alissa Arnold and we agree for the life for this family as you Word says to do in I John 5:16. We declare that Godly wisdom will enter into Pete and Alissa’s mind so that they will make a right decision for life. We ask all this in Jesus’s Name Amen.

  42. Steve says:

Oh and thanks Victoria as well. I didn’t see what you wrote there.
I think Molech could use a hug too, I mean Malech.

  43. Sally says:

An update on the website Birth or Not has been posted and yes baby Wiggles is going to recieve the gift of life. I think what came out of this debate was the fact of how far the pro-abortion side would go to promote death. There were several thousands of fraudelent votes to kill this baby in the womb. Human kind indeed has an great enemy who will go to great lengths to destrou us.We always need to be on the alert to the schemen of the devil comes to kill, steal and destroy.
